Actemium and UGent jointly engage in research on energy-aware optimization models

Aalter, 5 december 2022 - Ghent University and Actemium, the brand of VINCI Energies that specializes in tailor-made solutions and services for industry, officially launched the Actemium Sustainable Energy chair on Nov. 16. The chair was awarded to the Industrial Systems Engineering (ISyE) research group of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. Prof. El-Houssaine Aghezzaf is holder of the chair, Prof. Stijn De Vuyst promotor.

With this Sustainable Energy chair, Actemium wants to promote long-term research on how to optimally integrate sustainable energy costs, constraints & opportunities into energy-conscious production planning and optimization. Dr. Pieter Leyman will conduct the research within this chair.

"This chair fits within the holistic vision of Actemium and the VINCI Energies group on energy transition and digital transformation," explains Luc Clabout, Managing Director Actemium Belgium. "With our mission 'Towards the Sustainable Factory of the Future', we are building in Belgium, together with our industrial customers, a future-oriented and smart integration of sustainability in the industrial process. The fact that the energy issue is also a very hot topic among our industrial customers is of course not surprising. By combining our process know-how with the academic knowledge of UGent, we want to focus on the development of advanced models and smart solution techniques for the design, the optimization and simulation of sustainable production systems."

Actemium is also adding an 'advisory board' to the chair, composed of customers who want to actively participate in the further development. In this way, efficiency and added value can be achieved even faster in co-creation.

The chair was officially inaugurated on Nov. 16, 2022 with an inaugural event, in the presence of Minister Vincent Van Peteghem, Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and Prof. Patrick De Baets, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. In the iGent tower in Zwijnaarde, a diverse audience of UGent academics, alumni and students, as well as customers and partners of Actemium, were presented with the current context and explained the set-up of this chair.

The start of a sustainable partnership between Ghent University and Actemium was thus officially given.
